1A Girls Track and Field: Discus State Meet Falls on Day 2

LAKEWOOD – Last season, Jaylyn Kechter set a Class 1A state meet record of 137 feet, 8 inches in the discus.

As time went on, the Idalia thrower grew a bit tired of that record and wanted a shiny new one. So this year as a senior, Kechter headed to Jefferson County Stadium on Friday on a mission to create a replacement standard.

In the finals, Kechter threw 183-2 to break her own record.

“It was a foot farther than last year, so I got to break my state record, so I was happy,” Kechter said. “I was almost 10 feet under my PR, but I was still really excited. It didn’t taste as good as it did last year, but it still tasted really good. I PR’d three times in the regular season and I got the 1A all-time state record for regular and postseason, and that was a goal I was striving for and I got it at the very last track meet. It was just a great season.”

In the 1A girls triple jump, Peetz sophomore Savaun Cook won the gold with a mark of 33 feet, 10.25 inches despite entering the event seeded fourth.

“It’s crazy. I really wasn’t expecting to do this well,” Cook said. “I think I was just really excited and I really wanted to win, so I pushed myself. I PR’d by three inches. The stakes definitely made me want to strive for more and I definitely did today.”

In the 1A girls 800-meter run, Cheraw’s Delaney Bond won the title with a time of 2 minutes, 18.17 seconds.

In the 1A girls 800-meter relay, McClave – Ashlynn Steinbrunn, Addison Vallejos, Abrielle Gomez and Kristen Marks – won with a time of 1:48.74.

In the 1A girls 3,200-meter relay, Idalia – Natalie Helling, Brigette Kite, Kaitlyn Helling and Ailyn Monarrez – took first with a time of 10:38.35.
