2A Girls Track and Field: Wiggins' Brooke Schimdt Breaks Discus Record

LAKEWOOD - For a school of 230 students, Wiggins has produced some elite throwers over the years.

Mohamed Ibrahim earned multiple state championships three and four years ago. His brother, Laith, was also impressive. Now Brooke Schmidt is the latest superstar in the ring.

In fact, on Thursday, she became the first-ever 2A Girls Discus Thrower to go over 140 feet at the state championships. The junior launched a massive throw of 146 feet, 10 inches in the finals.

“It feels amazing. I knew from the beginning that this was one of the goals I had,” Schmidt said. “Even though we’re a small town, we have a bunch of people with big hearts.”

After tossing 132-6 in the prelims, she threw her 146-10 on the first throw of the finals. A slow start didn’t hold Schmidt back from accomplishing a great feat.

“I was just trying to relax and to just get a good throw to make Finals,” the Wiggins junior said. “I looked at my coach and he said it’s time to just relax and do what you know how to do.”

The 2A state meet record had been held since 2000 (139-8, Loree Smith of Julesburg). Schmidt is also first in all classifications this year with a top mark of 149-8 (St. Vrain Invite on May 10th). She was the state runner-up in 2024.

Her teammate, Terrah Fitzsimmons, also boosted Wiggins in the team competition by tallying six points in finishing 4th in the discus.

“We’ve worked together since freshman year, even through middle school. Being able to share moments like this is amazing,” Schmidt said of her beloved teammate.

But, the spotlight was on Schmidt, who has a chance of sweeping the throws gold medals. She is seeded No. 1 in shot put.

“My goal is 40 feet. I’m one inch off our school record,” Schmidt said of her personal best mark of 39 feet, 11 inches.

In other action, Ridgway (10:03.34) won the 4x800m relay.

Buena Vista’s Taiya Carl earned her third-consecutive pole vault championship with a mark of 11 feet, 1 inch.

Lainee Nein (Sedgwick County) won triple kump (36 feet, 9.5 inches), and Taya Wren of Rangely claimed the 3200 meter championship in 11 minutes, 21.43 seconds.

Lake County (24.5 points) leads Heritage Christian (24) in the team competition. Expect to hear from Wiggins over the next two days, as well.
