4A Boys Tennis: Finals, Third-Place Matches Slated for Saturday

PUEBLO – After two days of play, the finals and third-place matches have been determined for the 4A Boys Tennis Individual State Championships at Pueblo City Park. All matches are scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
  
In No. 1 singles, D'Evelyn sophomore Nithesh Karuppasamy will face senior Vivaan Bhardwaj of Peak to Peak. Karuppasamy, who finished third last year, won his Friday semifinal over George Washington's Andrew Rettig 6-4, 6-4, while Bhardwaj outlasted Colorado Academy sophomore Bennett Neely 6-2, 0-6, 7-5.
 
In No. 2 singles, Peak to Peak junior Shreyas Sundaresan will play Colorado Academy senior Oliver Neely. Sundaresan, who tied for fifth at No. 3 singles last year, was a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 winner over Kent Denver senior Liam O'Drobniak (state champion in No. 1 doubles last year) in the semifinals, while Neely defeated Niwot senior Oskar Hansen 6-4, 6-4. Bennett Neely and Oliver Neely were the state champions at No. 3 doubles last year.
 
In No. 3 singles, Kent Denver sophomore Vyaan Chopra will face Colorado Academy senior Craig Stapleton. Chopra beat Peak to Peak freshman Cody Palmer 6-1 6-0 in the semifinals, while Stapleton was a 7-6, 6-2 winner over George Washington's Aaron Whitely. Chopra was a state runner-up at No. 3 doubles last year.
 
In No. 1 doubles, the final will pit the Colorado Academy pair of Hendrik Jordaan and Peter Owen against the D'Evelyn tandem of Dylan Reeb and Simon Czarnecki. The Colorado Academy team beat Gareth Keller and Ben Miller of Grand Junction 6-0, 6-1 in a Friday semifinal, while the D'Evelyn duo won 7-6, 6-3 over Reid Calamari and Levi Pollyea of Kent Denver -- Calamari was one half of the No. 4 doubles state runner-up team a year ago. Owen/Jordaan were state champions at No. 4 doubles in 2024.
 
In No. 2 doubles, the state championship will go to the Kent Denver team of Jake Silverman and Noah Landrey due to the retirement of the Colorado Academy team of Jay Bhandari and Luka Jovanovic. Kent Denver advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 win over the Peak to Peak team of Adi Gaur and Anders Todd, and Colorado Academy beat Hayden Hayes and Andy Fleet of Evergreen 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.

In No. 3 doubles, Colorado Academy has yet another finalist with CJ Marshall and Thomas Rollhaus set to play the Grand Junction team of Jude Knaysi and Oliver Keller. Colorado Academy beat the Peak to Peak pair of Marcos Lopez Flaus and Damian Gorsevski 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals, while Grand Junction's semifinal win was a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 thriller over Evergreen's Gordon Salmen and Sage Chapman.

And in No. 4 doubles, Kent Denver's Suleman Ismail and Danny Friedman Valenzuela will play Mullen's Alexander Pruisner and Steven Welte. The Kent Denver team topped Grand Junction's Witt Reddin and Zach Nelson 6-1, 6-1 in one semifinal, while Mullen stopped Colorado Academy's Elliot Brown and Mitchell Sindler 6-2, 6-3.
 
In the third-place matches, at No. 1 singles, Frederick senior Josiah Brittenham will play Kent Denver junior Noah Bogel after each won twice Friday, including a victory over one of Friday's semifinalists. In No. 2 singles, O'Drobniak of Kent Denver and Hansen of Niwot bounced back for 6-1, 6-1 playback semifinals wins (O'Drobniak defeated Grand Junction junior Jacob Smith, Hansen beat D'Evelyn freshman Dayne Martinez) and will play for third. In No. 3 singles, Palmer of Peak to Peak topped junior Josh Curtiss of Coronado 6-2, 6-3 in one playback semifinal, while George Washington's Whiteley defeated junior Wilson Mancini of Palmer Ridge 6-3, 6-3 to set up the third-place match.
 
In No. 1 doubles, George Washington's Matt Holliger and Ben Parsons knocked off the Grand Junction team to reach the third-place match against Kent Denver, which topped Andrew Van Abbema and Oli Franco of Thomas Jefferson 6-1, 6-2 in the playback semifinal. In No. 2 doubles, both the D'Evelyn team of Cael Parker and Daniel Sias and the Mullen duo of Clarke Shields and Matthew Raval defeated semifinalists in the playbacks -- D'Evelyn beat Evergreen 7-6, 6-2 and Mullen topped Peak to Peak 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 -- to reach the third-place match. At No. 3 doubles, both the Mullen team of Cooper Wurst and Jack Shields and the D'Evelyn duo of James Sanders and Ryan Park defeated semifinalists in playbacks to reach the third-place match -- Mullen beat Peak to Peak 6-4, 6-7, 7-2 and D'Evelyn topped Evergreen 6-2, 7-5. And at No. 4 doubles, both Grand Junction's Reddin/Nelson (7-6, 6-1 over George Washington's Carson Cramer and Michael DiPaulo) and Colorado Academy's Brown/Sindler (6-1, 6-0 over Evergreen's Beckett Hemmer and Alex Fleet) won playback semis to reach the third-place match.
