LAKEWOOD – As the reigning Class 1A state long jump champion, Konner Rowden-Stum was understandably confident he could put together a monster senior season.
He wasn’t wrong.
On Thursday at the track and field state championships, Rowden-Stum treated the crowd at Jefferson County Stadium to an historic performance, jumping 22 feet, 6.5 inches to set the 1A state meet record.
“It was definitely a goal from the start of the year,” Rowden-Stum said. “Our school record is 22-11, so that was the vision all along. Getting the state record was definitely a blessing. This whole season has been reckless with the snow and all the meets getting canceled. Even with the snow, we’ve gone over to Limon and we’ve practiced. It’s just the hard work paying off.”
In the 1A boys shot put, Lone Star senior Wyatt Cochran defended his title from last year with a throw of 44 feet, 10.25 inches to claim gold.
In the 3,200-meter run, Primero senior entered as the top seed and ran away with first place. His time of 9:55.29 was nearly 35 seconds faster than the nearest runner.
The track and field state championships will continue on Friday starting at 9 a.m.
