Volleyball roundup: Hoehne outlasts La Junta in five sets
In a battle of volleyball programs from different classifications, Hoehne edged La Junta with a 3-2 win.
Hoehne, ranked No. 5 in Class 2A, won the match 25-19, 13-25, 25-12, 20-25 and 15-9. La Junta plays in 3A.
Thursday was the first day of competition for volleyball teams, meaning it was the the season-opener for both schools.
Hoehne’s next match is against Fowler on Aug. 29, while La Junta plays Las Animas that same day.
Grandview cruises to opening win
Grandview, the No. 9 team in 5A, swept Regis Jesuit in their season-opener.
The Wolves won 25-22, 25-20, 25-22.

- Paityn Hardison had 19 kills and Laura Bauer had 37 assists as Douglas County beat Smoky Hill 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-15, 29-27).
- Kim Martin recorded 16 kills and 18 digs to help Frontier Academy beat Lyons 3-2.
