DENVER - The Great 8, the quarterfinal round of the Colorado High School Activities Association's 6A Girls Basketball State Championship, was played Friday, with winners advancing to the semifinals on Thursday.
When the dust cleared, No. 1 Cherokee Trail is the only top-four seed to reach the semifinals.
The day started with No. 5 Northfield defeating No. 13 Riverdale Ridge 66-59, despite 41 points from Brihanna Crittendon, the state's all-time scoring leader. Madison Bethel scored 21 points and London Taylor had 16 points and six rebounds to lead Northfield. Then No. 6 Denver East's Mairead Hearty had 17 points and 13 rebounds in a 58-46 win over No. 3 Valor Christian. No. 1 Cherokee Trail got 29 points by Aaliyah Broadus in a 66-39 victory over No. 9 Legend in the third game of the day. And, in the nightcap, No. 7 Highlands Ranch got 24 points from Addie Moon and stunned No. 2 Arapahoe 54-31.
After the March 12 semifinals, the championship game will be played Saturday, March 14.
