AURORA - The semfinals of the Colorado High School Activities Association's 5A Boys and Girls Basketball State Championships were played Thursday at the Denver Coliseum.
In Thursday's first boys game, Luke Schmeeckle had 18 points and seven rebounds as No. 13 Silver Creek topped No. 8 Lewis-Palmer, 51-47. Then Kade Speckman had 31 points and 11 rebounds as No. 11 Lutheran overcame defending state champion and No. 10 Windsor, which got 32 points from Madden Smiley, for a 77-70 win.
In girls play, No. 2 Green Mountain rallied from a 24-9 first-quarter deficit and outscored No. 3 Montrose 40-15 over the final three quarters for a 49-39 victory in the opener. Then No. 1 Lutheran's Isla Koffmann, capping a 14-point, 15-rebound performance, scored the game's final points on a short jumper with 2:08 to play for a thrilling 38-36 win over No. 5 Standley Lake.
The championship games are Saturday, with the girls at 5:45 pm. and the boys at 7:15 p.m.
