GRANBY – Carter Niemkiewicz of Summit won his second straight classic title on Saturday at CHSAA’s Nordic State Championships at Snow Mountain Range and led his school to its second straight team state championship.
Niemkiewicz, third Friday in the skate race, completed the 5-kilometer Snow Mountain Range course in 17 minutes, 31.62 seconds, finishing 12.26 seconds faster than teammate John Ryan, who was the winner of Friday’s skate. Niemkiewicz is the first back-to-back winner of the classic state title since Cameron Wolfe of Vail Mountain in 2018 and 2019. He was also second in the classic in 2024 and ninth as a freshman in 2023.
Summit also won the Nordic relay (two legs skate, two legs classic), building upon a substantial lead in the team race. Summit also won the inaugural Nordic boys team state championship last year and also won the Alpine skiing state championship earlier this week.
The rest of the top 10 in the individual classic included: Jonah Barber of Eagle Valley (third in 18:10.58); Jackson McLaren of Steamboat Springs (fourth, 18:16.31); Levi Ryan of Summit (fifth, 18:32.93); Wilson Anderson of Lake County (sixth, 19:01.64); Leo Tornatzky of Poudre School District (seventh, 19:03.02); Christopher Marsh of Eagle Valley (eighth, 19:06.86); Daniel Butler of Summit (ninth, 19:11.84); and Owen Fallon of Summit (10
th, 19:16.46).
Barber finished third in classic for the second straight year.
Barber (fifth), McLaren (ninth), Levi Ryan (seventh), Anderson (10
th) and Butler (sixth) all placed in the top 10 in Friday’s skate as well.
Combined with Friday's classic race and Saturday's two events, Summit recorded 674 team points. Eagle Valley was second with 591, Poudre School District was third with 558, Steamboat Springs placed fourth 550 and Middle Park was fifth with 516.
Following Summit in the relay were second-place Poudre School District, third-place Eagle Valley, fourth-place Steamboat Springs, and fifth-place Middle Park.
