Skiing: Summit's Seth Montgomery Earns Third Straight Giant Slalom State Championship

VAIL -- Summit senior Seth Montgomery earned his third straight title in the boys giant slalom during Wednesday's opening day of the CHSAA Alpine Skiing State Championships at Vail Ski Resort.

Montgomery's two-run time of 1 minute, 36.63 seconds was just over one second better than Aspen junior Joshua Stephen, who was second in 1:37.72.

Montgomery won both the giant slalom and slalom in both 2024 and 2025 and is the event's first three-time champion. Previously, Toby Scarpella of Durango (2020 and 2022) and Sands Simonton of Battle Mountain (2014 and 2015) won the giant slalom twice.

The 2026 slalom championship is Thursday. With five individual Alpine state championships, Montgomerry has two more titles than any boys skier in state championship history.

Rounding out the rest of the giant slalom top 10 were: junior Aaron Green of Summit, third in 1:38.26; sophomore Soren Shepherd of Steamboat Springs, fourth in 1:38.57; senior Erich Mclean of Summit, fifth in 1:38.88; freshman Bryce Monte of Evergreen, sith in 1:39.07; sophomore Jonathan Nichols of Steamboat Springs, seventh in 1:39.29; junior Ryder Lanning of Nederland, eighth in 1:40.77; senior Alek Guziur of Middle Park, ninth in 1:40.79; and sophomore Colin Kaneda of Vail Mountain, 10th in 1:41.34.

Wednesday's giant slalom result was the same as last year, when Montgomery and Stephen also finished 1-2. Stephen was sixth in 2024.

Montgomery sailed down his first run with the best time of the day, 45.24 seconds, with Stephen second in 45.90. Montomgery also had the best second run of 51.39, with Stephen second-best in 51.82.
