Skiing: Malie Dieterich Leads Summit Sweep of Top Four Spots in Giant Slalom

VAIL -- Sophomore Malie Dieterich led Summit to a sweep of the top four spots in the giant slalom on Wednesday at the opening day of the Colorado High School Activities Association's Girls Skiing State Championships at Vail Ski Resort.

Dieterich's two-run total time of 1 minute, 37.97 seconds was four-hundredths of a second faster than senior teammate Mackenzie Cross' two-run total. Sophomore Lauren Leffel of Summit was third in 1:42.89, while freshman Kaia Riter was fourth in 1:43.47. Also finishing among the top 10 for Summit were freshman Brooke Bjorklund (sixth in 1:44.02) and freshman Caroline Brownson (eighth in 1:44.98).

Other top-10 finishers were sophomore Ava Somers of Aspen (fifth in 1:43.62), junior Marloes Adriaanse of Middle Park (seventh in 1:44.10), sophomore Lucille Dietrich of Steamboat Springs (ninth in 1:45.12) and junior Jess Heid of Middle Park (10th in 1:45.26).

Dieterich's blistering first run of 48.19 seconds was the fastest of the day. Cross had the best second run, finishing in 49.60.

Cross, the only senior among the top 10, finished third in the event in both 2024 and 2025. Last year's runner-up, Ruth DeMino of Battle Mountain, was third after the first run but didn't finish her second run, nor did teammate Mia Eaton, who was fourth after the first run.

Medals will be awarded Thursday after the slalom races have been completed.
