AURORA – The Sweet 16 of the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 5A Boys Basketball State Championship was played Tuesday night.
In three of the closest games, defending state champion and No. 11 seed Windsor knocked off No. 6 Regis Groff 55-53, No. 12 Mesa Ridge beat No. 28 Palmer Ridge 48-45, and No. 10 Lutheran defeated No. 7 Rampart 60-58. Lutheran broke a 55-55 tie on a 3-pointer with 25 seconds to go, then added another basket after a Rampart miss and held on for a 60-58 win as Rampart hit a long 3 at the buzzer.
While the top three seeds have advanced to the Great Eight, the rest of the field is No. 8 Lewis-Palmer, No. 10 Lutheran, No. 11 Windsor, No. 12 Mesa Ridge and No. 13 Silver Creek.
The tournament now shifts to the Denver Coliseum. The quarterfinals are Saturday, with the semifinals set for Thursday, March 12 and the championship game on Saturday, March 14.
