AURORA – The second round of the Colorado High School Activities Association’s 6A Girls Basketball State Championship was completed Saturday.
Avery Jones’ 10-foot baseline jumper at the buzzer lifted No. 17 Eaglecrest to a 54-53 win at No. 16 Ralston Valley in the most exciting finish of the day. Other close contests saw No. 14 Arvada West hold off No. 19 Fruita Monument 46-43 and No. 5 Northfield outscore No. 28 Smoky Hill 91-83.
The top 14 seeds have advanced to the round of 16, with only Eaglecrest and No. 18 Fort Collins (a 61-44 winner over defending champion and No. 14 Grandview) breaking through against higher seeds.
The third round is set for Wednesday at home sites, then the scene shifts to the Denver Coliseum for quarterfinals on Friday, March 6, followed by the semifinals on Thursday, March 12 and the championship games on Saturday, March 14.
