2A Girls Golf: Lee, Colorado Academy Lead After Opening Day

PUEBLO -- Led by freshman Sophia Lee's round of 2-over-par 74 at the Pueblo Country Club, Colorado Academy has a 4-stroke lead on second-place Salida after Monday's opening round of the two-round CHSAA 2A Girls Golf State Championship.

Lee birdied the 12th hole and recorded an eagle on the par-5 14th hole in a round that included 12 pars on the 5,617-yard course. Colorado Academy teammate Avery Lent is 12th after shooting 87, and Jordan Slutzky carded a 95 for the Mustangs' three-player team score of 256. Salida stands at 260, with Denver Christian third at 264.

Lee has a one-stroke lead on Salida's Kyndra Johnson, who is at 3-over, while Addison Dorsey of Manitou Springs is another stroke back at 4-over. Sterling's Macie Doherty is in fourth after shooting 6-over.

Kent Denver's Kaia Chand (9-over 81) is fifth, Denver Christian's Aspen Murphy and Aspen's Lenna Persson are tied for sixth at 82, Hope Torres (83) of Prospect Ridge Academy is eighth, Sarah Farmer (84) of Denver Christian is ninth, and Quinn Roman (85) of St. Mary's Academy is 10th.

The tournament concludes with another 18-hole round Tuesday. The top two teams receive trophies, while the top 10 individuals earn medals.

Runner-up in 3A last year, Colorado Academy is seeking its seventh girls golf state championship, which would be its first since 2019.

In last year's 3A championship, Johnson was second, Persson tied for fourth, Dorsey was sixth, Doherty was eighth, Lent was ninth and Slutzky was 10th.
