6A Girls Basketball: Grandview Wins Third State Title in Four Years

DENVER – A year after departing the postseason in the Sweet 16, the Grandview girls basketball team is back on top.

At the Denver Coliseum on Saturday, the Wolves won 61-39 over Legend in the Class 6A state championship game. Grandview has now won five girls basketball state titles since 2017 and has been crowned champion in two of the three seasons since the start of the new 6A classification.

“I’m super excited. I’m super happy for my team,” Grandview senior Sienna Betts said. “We worked so hard for this and we came back and worked after last year’s loss in the Sweet 16. I’m just so proud of the coaches and all of us.”

In Saturday’s season finale, Betts (23.1 ppg) finished with a game-high 21 points and 16 rebounds. That was her 81st career double-double, which is a state record. Roosevelt’s Kylee Shook previously held the record with 80.

Behind the three-time Gatorade Colorado Girls Basketball Player of the Year’s dominant performance, the top-seeded Wolves (25-3) led 16-7 after the first quarter and 33-17 at halftime. Trailing to start the third, No. 7 Legend (22-6) outscored Grandview, 11-9, in the third quarter but the Wolves halted that run and pulled further away in the fourth quarter.

“They executed what we asked them to do phenomenally well,” Grandview head coach Josh Ulitsky said. “We needed to take care of the basketball, take away the 3-point line and rebound. So, those were the big keys for us.”

Also for Grandview, Deija Roberson scored 15 points and sophomore Ava Chang (14.8 ppg) scored 10.

Grandview’s only in-state loss this season came at the hands of 2024 state champion Valor Christian on Jan. 4.

Grandview has now won five girls basketball state titles.

Senior Grace Stanley (10.4 ppg) led Legend with 11 points. Starns scored seven points, and Mason Borcherding and Ava Gavi each scored six.

Still seeking its first girls basketball title, Saturday’s appearance in the state championship game was Legend’s first.

To reach the championship game, Grandview won 39-35 over No. 5 Pine Creek. On the other side of the bracket, Legend won 59-50 over No. 14 Riverdale Ridge in its semifinal.

Eads is the all-time leader with nine girls basketball state championships.
