5A Boys Basketball: First Round Updates




AURORA – The first round of the 2025 CHSAA 5A Boys State Tournament took place Friday, with the 16 winners advancing to the second round.
There were four upsets throughout the round and one overtime contest, as No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain outlasted No. 24 Palisade, 50-44, in extra time.
No. 28 Mountain View is the lowest-seeded team still remaining as it upset No. 5 Discovery Canyon, 51-43. No. 25 Sand Creek also took down a top-10 seed with a 47-40 win over No. 8 Severance, while No. 23 Lewis-Palmer upset the No. 10 seed Mead, 64-58. The final upset belongs to No. 21 Falcon, which got past No. 12 Eagle Valley, 62-56.
There were also a number of close games, as No. 1 Lutheran got past No. 32 Golden by six points, 65-59, and No. 14 Palmer needed four points to down No. 19 Evergreen, 54-50. There were two seven-point games, as No. 4 Montrose defeated No. 29 Thornton, 46-39, and No. 11 Longmont got past No. 22 Grand Junction, 41-34, and two nine-point contests as No. 16 Green Mountain knocked off No. 17 Frederick, 71-62, and No. 13 Rampart defeated No. 20 Durango, 46-37.
Other Friday night games included No. 2 Mesa Ridge defeating No. 31 Pueblo Central, 65-51, No. 3 Dakota Ridge cruising past No. 30 Thompson Valley, 80-38, No. 5 Windsor knocking off No. 27 Pueblo East, 69-39, No. 7 Standley Lake defeating No. 26 Mullen, 64-46, and No. 15 Thomas Jefferson earning a 56-33 win over No. 18 Palmer Ridge.
Friday’s winners move onto the second round, which will be played next Tuesday.
