5A Boys Soccer: First Round Games Complete, Second Round Set




AURORA – All of the 16 first round games in the 5A Boys Soccer State Championships has concluded, with five resulting in upsets, as No. 18 Horizon, No. 19 Valor Christian, No. 22 Erie, No. 23 Fort Collins and No. 24 Grandview all advanced as underdogs.
No. 1 Northfield, No. 2 Boulder, No. 3 Broomfield, No. 4 Cherry Creek, No. 5 Denver East, No. 6 Regis Jesuit, No. 7 Columbine, No. 8 Ralston Valley, No. 12 Rock Canyon, No. 13 Grand Junction and No. 16 Pine Creek also advanced to the second round.
No. 1 Northfield defeated No. 32 Legend, 3-1, and will advance to the second round where it will face No. 16 Pine Creek, which defeated No. 17 Cherokee Trail, 2-0, Thursday.
No. 2 Boulder defeated No. 31 Fountain-Fort Carson, 9-0, and will advance to the second round to face No. 18 Horizon. Needing a shootout to advance, Horizon played No. 15 Heritage to a 1-1 double-overtime tie before advancing on penalty kicks by a score of 4-1.
No. 3 Broomfield got past No. 30 Castle View, 5-2, and will face No. 19 Valor Christian in the second round, as the Eagles upset No. 14 Vista PEAK Prep, 2-1, to advance.
No. 4 Cherry Creek shutout No. 29 Vista Ridge, while No. 13 Grand Junction escaped No. 20 Arapahoe, 2-1. Cherry Creek will host Grand Junction in the second round.
No. 5 Denver East shutout No. 28 Aurora Central, 4-0, and No. 12 Rock Canyon defeated No. 21 Denver North, 2-1, to send Denver East and Rock Canyon to the second round.
No. 6 Regis Jesuit shutout No. 27 Denver South, 5-0, to move on and will await the winner of Saturday’s first-round matchup between No. 11 Liberty and No. 22 Erie.
One goal was all that was needed for both No. 1 Columbine and No. 23 Fort Collins, as Columbine got past No. 26 Fossil Ridge, 1-0, and Fort Collins upset No. 10 Legacy, 1-0. Columbine and Fort Collins will now meet in the second round.
No. 8 Ralston Valley and No. 24 Grandview both posted shutouts in its first round contest and will advance to the second round to face each other. Ralston Valley knocked off No. 25 Mountain Vista, 2-0, and Grandview upset No. 9 Fairview, 1-0.
