Windsor Captures Its First-Ever Unified Bowling State Championship

ENGLEWOOD - In its first three years as a sanctioned sport with the Colorado High School Activities Association, a different Pueblo school had won each of the Unified Bowling State Championships.

That changed on Friday, as Windsor became the first high school from outside the city of Pueblo to win a state title.

“This is huge for us,” said Heather Gloyd, a coach for the Windsor, Colorado-based school. “We put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this, and it turned out great. Our program is growing; we came with 21 bowlers and played five, alternating two every game, and they did awesome. They came together as a group and blew us out of the water. They were amazing.”

Windsor's five bowlers - senior Marley Lyon, senior Elijah Crandall, junior Josiah Medina, senior Jacob Carpio and sophomore Jadyn Hodge - combined to knock down a new state championship record 651 total pins throughout the five Baker-format games at Bowlero Englewood. Silver Creek took second with a score of 617 and Pueblo Centennial finished third, knocking down 591 total pins.

“I think we’ve come a long way, especially with [senior team captain] Jacob using that ramp,” said Lyon, an experienced bowler who just completed her first year of unified bowling at Windsor. “It’s so hard to be accurate with the ramp, but we’ve focused on trying to hook it a little bit, especially for the seven pin, and I think we’ve gotten better with that.

“Jadyn has also come a long way,” Lyon continued. “She used to get a lot of gutter balls, but I’ve taken time to do one-on-ones with her and she’s been able to keep it on the lane pretty well this year!”

The addition of Lyon has been a huge asset for Windsor, which finished sixth last year with a total pinfall score of 529 and runner-up in 2021 with a score of 355.

“Overall, as I said with the reporter, this is awesome,” Carpio said. “I’ve really come full circle, and this whole team has gone out with a bang. Last year, we went to state but didn’t win and now, we came back and we won state this year; and that’s pretty awesome!”

With a senior-heavy team this year, Windsor will be looking to replace it senior class, including Jack Scott, who sang the National Anthem to kick off the event.
