5A Boys Soccer: No. 1 Seed Upset In First Round

AURORA – The first round of the CHSAA’s 2023 5A Boys Soccer State Championship Tournament was completed Wednesday night. The winners will all advance to the second round, with matches being played at the home site of the higher-seeded team on Oct. 31. Start times for all games can be found on the bracket.

No. 32 seed Lakewood advanced to the second round by defeating No. 1 seed Legacy 2-1 in a thrilling overtime upset. They will play No. 16 seed Liberty in the first round, after they beat No. 17 seed Rock Canyon 1-0 in their first-round matchup.

No. 8 seed Cherry Creek will host No. 9 seed Regis Jesuit, after Cherry Creek beat No. 25 seed Heritage 3-2 and Regis Jesuit beat No. 24 seed Horizon 2-0.

No. 5 seed Arapahoe beat No. 28 seed Far Northeast 3-1 in the first round to reach their second-round matchup against No. 12 seed Fairview. Fairview reached the second round by defeating No. 21 seed Mountain Vista.

No. 4 seed Denver East and No. 13 seed Aurora Central will meet up in the second round after Denver East defeated No. 29 seed Doherty 3-0 and Aurora Central defeated No. 20 seed Fort Collins 2-0.

On the other half of the bracket, No. 3 seed Rampart advanced to the second round by defeating No. 30 seed Vista PEAK Prep 3-1. They will play No. 14 seed Cherokee Trail in the first round, after Cherokee Trail beat No. 19 seed Valor Christian 1-0 in their first round matchup.

No. 11 seed Legend will host No. 27 seed ThunderRidge, after Legend beat No. 22 seed Rocky Mountain 3-2 and ThunderRidge upset No. 6 seed Pine Creek 2-1.

No. 7 seed Broomfield beat No. 26 seed Chaparral 5-0 in the first round to reach their second round matchup against No. 10 seed Fossil Ridge. Fossil Ridge reached the second round by defeating No. 23 seed Adams City 4-0.

No. 2 seed Ralston Valley and No. 15 seed Boulder will meet up in the second round after Ralston Valley survived in overtime against No. 31 seed Denver South 2-1 and Boulder defeated No. 18 seed Grandview 2-0.

Following the second round will be the quarterfinals, played on Nov. 4. All quarterfinals matches will be hosted at Englewood High School and tickets can be purchased here, once available. The semifinals will follow on Nov. 8, at University of Denver Soccer Stadium, and tickets will be available for purchase. The state championship finals will then be played on Nov. 11, at Switchbacks Weidner Field in Colorado Springs. Championship tickets can be found here.
