4A girls swimming: Niwot's Mary Codevilla puts bow on illustrious high school swimming career

One of the greatest Colorado high school girls swimming careers ended today, and it ended with a bang.

Niwot senior Mary Codevilla swam her last high school meet at the 2022 Class 4A state championships, and all she did was win two individual races, set a new 4A state record and win the coaches vote for 4A Swimmer of the Year.

Her wins came in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.07 seconds, as well as in the 100 breaststroke, where she broke her own 4A state record of 1:01.38, set the night before last night, with a blazing 1:00.84.

“I’m shocked,” Codevilla exclaimed about setting the record. “I just came into this meet wanting to have fun and enjoy my last meet with my teammates, so it’s just beyond expectations. I’m just super happy with it.”

Her win in the 100 breast came over another top 4A swimmer in Cheyenne Mountain's Caroline Bricker, who set a state record of her own in the 200 IM earlier in the meet. She clocked in with a 1:01.09, which would have been the state standard, if not for Codevilla standing in her way.

“Mary is such a stud," Bricker said. "For her to win that is incredible. I’m really happy for her and she deserved it so much.”

The two wins marks seven individual golds for Codevilla in her illustrious four-year career, to go along with two 4A state records. She also holds the state standard in the 500 freestyle with a 4:51.98 set at last year’s meet.

“I couldn’t have done this without my team, they are the most supportive team in the world," Codevilla added. “They are the reason I’m so emotional tonight, because I wouldn’t be anything without them. They’ve worked so hard alongside me and they’ve had my back which means the world to me and I’m just so excited to continue to watch them succeed.”

Codevilla is now off to Notre Dame on a swimming scholarship, where she will look to take some of that Colorado swimming prowess into the vaunted ACC. Although, not before she left her mark all over the state record books, and the Niwot swimming program.

“One of my biggest goals this year and throughout my whole high school career was to pass down my knowledge I’ve gained and be a good leader, so those younger girls can continue the legacy of Niwot swimming,” Codevilla said.
