No. 3 Broomfield girls soccer needs seven minutes of OT to beat No. 2 Rocky Mountain
It’s no surprise that 80 minutes of soccer can wear down even the best teams in the state. That’s why it was a relief for Broomfield coach Jim Davidson when Mallory Mooney broke a scoreless tie with Rocky Mountain just seven minutes into overtime.
That goal gave Class 5A No. 3 Broomfield a 1-0 win over No. 2 Rocky Mountain in a game that has been one of the hotly contested matchups in the Front Range League the last few seasons.
“Rocky Mountain has been the bane of our existence as far as the league is concerned,” Davison said. “We’ve lost to them the last two years after beating them three years ago in a great game that went to overtime.”
It was the first loss of the season for the Lobos (11-1-1 overall). What helped the Eagles (10-0-1, 9-0-1) was that Rocky Mountain appeared to limit the minutes for senior Maddy Williams.
“Maddy was in and out of the game last night,” Davidson said. “I don’t know if there was an issue or maybe some fatigue, but she didn’t play a ton of minutes last night.”
Still, the Lobos found their chances to get the ball on net. But Broomfield senior keeper Grace Fuller was able to make five saves and keep the Eagles in the game through regulation.
Seven minutes into the first overtime, Gia Lemley found Mooney who buried the shot to end the game. Mooney, a sophomore, is second on the team with 12 goals on the year. Hailey Stodden leads the team with 21.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Colorado Springs to face Pine Creek. Rocky Mountain hosts Legacy on Tuesday.
