AURORA - The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) has released its enrollment splits for the next cycle, 2026-28.
These preliminary enrollment splits will be used to determine which classification a school competes in based on CHSAA Bylaw 1500, including student enrollment count.
These preliminary classification enrollment splits were created with the following guiding principles:
- As much as possible, similar schools are grouped into the same classification. This means the number of teams in a classification may not always be equal.
- Because classifications do not need to be balanced, sports with the same number of classifications can and should have similar cut lines, providing for more consistency.
- In many cases, this allows programs within the same school to compete in the same classification, although there will be exceptions.
- Where possible, split numbers should be rounded, and not exact. For example: 300, not 321.
- Where possible, in instances where sports have more classifications, schools should not have to play a school more than twice their size. Note that this is not always possible, especially in sports with a smaller number of classifications.
The CLOC declaration process will officially begin on Wednesday, Oct. 1, as schools must submit their Oct. 1 enrollment count data, sport participation declarations for the 2026-28 classification cycle by Wednesday, Oct. 15. Co-operative team arrangements are due to the CHSAA office by Jan. 1, 2026.
From there, the CHSAA office will work with the enrollment numbers to place schools in the classification for which they fall. Schools that qualify to place-down (
Bylaw 1500.46) must confirm its intent to accept the place-down by Monday, Dec. 1, and all primary league placements must be finalized ahead of the Classification and League Organizing Committee (CLOC) meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 10. The recommendations from CLOC will be sent to the Legislative Council for a vote in February.
