5A Boys Golf: Tight Team, Individual Race After Round 1

GRAND JUNCTION — Led by Nick Clinton’s round of 4-under par 67, Arapahoe holds the lead after Monday’s first round of the 5A Boys State Golf Tournament.

Araphoe posted a three-player team score of 3-over 216 at the Bookcliff Country Club, with Mac Buckley posting an ever-par 71 and Henry Juergens a 78.

Clinton, a junior, is fourth individually, trailing sophomore leader Ash Edwards of Fairview, who shot 6-under 65. Tied for second are Edwards’ senior teammate Miles Kuhl and senior defending champion Gavin Amella of Castle View, both at 66. Kuhl tied for third last year after tying second in 2023, while Edwards tied for sixth in 2024. Amella placed eighth in 2023.

The team race is also close, with Arapahoe leading Ralston Valley (217) by one stroke and Denver East (218) by two. There’s also a three-way tie for fourth just three strokes back at 219 among Arvada West, Cherokee Trail and Valor Christian. A total of 14 teams are within 10 strokes of the lead, setting up a potentially close finish for Tuesday’s second and final round.

Columbine sophmore Connor Young is fifth at 3-under. There’s a three-way tie for sixth at 1-under among Chatfield senior Wyatt Montoya, Regis Jesuit junior Will Farber and ThunderRidge junior Sean Wisler; while eight players are tied for ninth at even-par 71.
