LONGMONT -- Freshmen Max Music and Rev Bonniwell each shot rounds over 2-over par 72 on Monday to give Broomfield a 5-stroke lead in the team race after the opening day of the 4A Boys State Golf Tournament.

The second and final round at the Fox Hill Club is Tuesday.

The Broomfield freshman duo is part of a four-way tie for fifth in an individual race that has a three-way tie for first among senior Jack Moats of Air Academy, junior Everett Lewis of Northridge and senior Hunter Simmons of Grand Junction at even-par 70. Mead senior Stryker Leick is alone in fourth after shooting 71, while Highlands Ranch senior Billy Verstraate and Loveland senior Cole Underwood are among those tied for fifth. Simmons and Verstraate tied for 10th last year, while Verstraate previously in 5A tied for ninth in 2023 and tied for 14th in 2022. Simmons tied for eighth in 2023

Broomfield's three-player team score of 218 includes senior Ian Carlin's round of 4-over 74. In second place at 13-over 223 is Loveland, while Mead is third at 15-over 225.

Five golfers are tied for ninth at 3-over.
