4A Boys Tennis: Colorado Academy Wins Second State Title, First Since 2018

DENVER – For the first time in four years, Colorado has a new boys tennis team champion in Class 4A.

After finishing runner-up the past three seasons, No. 2 Colorado Academy won 4-0 against reigning champ and top-seeded Kent Denver at Denver Tennis Park on Tuesday. The victory marked Colorado Academy’s first title since 2018 and the program’s second overall.

“This is huge. This is our best team ever,” Colorado Academy head coach Noah Tondre said. “As far as mentally, we were talking about how we ended up four-zero today and we never lost in the playoffs. In fact, we just kept getting better and better. It’s just storybook. What a special team.”

Tuesday’s match marked the third-straight year that these two teams met in the dual team finals.

At No. 2 singles, Colorado Academy’s Oliver Neely won 6-0, 7-5 over Liam O’Drobniniak. At No. 3 singles, Colorado Academy’s Craig Stapleton won 7-6, 6-3 against Vyaan Chopra.

In the doubles matches, Colorado Academy’s Hendrick Jordaan and Peter Owen won 6-0, 6-4 over Reid Calamari and Levi Pollyea at the No. 1 spot. At No. 3 doubles, Colorado Academy’s CJ Marshall and Thomas Rollhaus won 6-3, 6-2 against Ollie Nelson and Sohan De.

“Today, we were just mentally tough,” Tonre said. “There was no negative emotion. We were all present. We stayed engaged. All that stuff. And then actually doing it on the court was fun to watch.”

Kent Denver - winners of all three previous dual team tournaments - made its fourth-straight appearance in the dual team tournament after defeating No. 4 D'Evelyn, 5-2, in the semifinals. The Sun Devils' first two matches were shutouts, as it knocked off No. 16 Niwot in the first round, 7-0, and No. 7 Discovery Canyon in the quarterfinals.

Colorado Academy returned to the championship match by sweeping No. 3 Peak to Peak in the semifinals, No. 7 George Washington in the quarterfinals and No. 15 Thomas Jefferson in the first round.

This marks the fourth year of the Boys Tennis Dual Team State Championships, as the tournament structure changed for the 2022 season. Previously, team points were calculated at the Boys Tennis Individual State Championships to determine the team state champion. In 4A, Kent Denver had won four straight team titles prior to this year, tying with Cheyenne Mountain in 2021 before capturing each of the dual team titles; as it swept Cheyenne Mountain, 7-0, in 2022 and then knocked off Colorado Academy, 4-0, in 2023 and 4-2 in 2024.
