AURORA - The first round of the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Boys Tennis Team State Championships was completed today, with all 16 teams in both classifications playing its first-round matches.
The winning teams advanced to the quarterfinal round, which will be played at the home site of the higher seed on Saturday, with matchups detailed at the bottom of this page. The higher-seeded team will host the individual dual matches through the semifinals with the final two teams in each classification advancing to the finals site – Denver Tennis Park – on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The semifinals will be on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
In the 5A bracket, No. 10 seed Arapahoe earned the lone upset of the first round, as the top seeds prevailed in all other matches. The Warriors knocked off No. 7 Ralston Valley, 4-3 and will advance to the second round to face No. 2 Cherry Creek on Saturday. The Bruins swept No. 15 Columbine, 7-0, to advance.
No. 1 Regis Jesuit swept No. 16 Northfield, 7-0 to advance, while No. 8 Grandview defeated No. 9 Fort Collins, 5-2. Regis Jesuit and Grandview will now face in the second round.
No. 3 Valor Christian beat No. 14 Boulder, 7-0, today to punch its ticket to the second round, where it will place No. 6 Mountain Vista. The Golden Eagles advanced by defeating No. 11 Pine Creek, 6-1.
No. 4 Fairview moved past No. 13 Castle View, 7-0 and will face No. 5 Fossil Ridge in the second round. Fossil Ridge earned its spot in the second round by besting No. 12 ThunderRidge, 4-3.
The 4A bracket featured a pair of upsets as No. 9 Vail Christian got past No. 8 Niwot, 6-1, and No. 12 Thomas Jefferson upset No. 5 Cheyenne Mountain, 5-2.
Vail Christian will advance to face top-seeded Kent Denver, which swept No. 16 Palmer Ridge, 7-0, and Thomas Jefferson will meet No. 4 Evergreen in the second round. Evergreen defeated No. 13 Dawson School, 6-1.
No. 2 Colorado Academy swept No. 15 Longmont, 7-0, to advance to the second round. Colorado Academy will face No. 7 George Washington, which defeated No. 10 Peak to Peak, 5-2, in the first round.
No. 3 D'Evelyn advanced to the second round with a 6-1 victory over No. 14 Lewis-Palmer. D'Evelyn's second round opponent will be No. 6 Grand Junction, which advanced by forfeit.
