Board of Directors Votes to Pass Update to CHSAA Seeding Index

AURORA - The CHSAA Board of Directors voted unanimously this past weekend to approve a modification to how the MaxPreps and RPI rankings are combined to form the CHSAA Seeding Index.

This modification only targets how the RPI and MaxPreps ranking systems are combined. The system itself is not changing.

In the past, the rankings from the RPI and MaxPreps systems were combined and averaged. This resulted in an average of more than one-third of teams from each classification being tied in the final CHSAA Seeding Index across sports. Therefore, the Board — which, by policy, determines the process for postseason qualification ranking systems — voted to address the overwhelming number of ties in the current format.

Effective this fall season, each team's MaxPreps and RPI ranking values will be normalized within their classification, then combined and averaged. This normalization will put the values on a common scale, so they can be combined in a meaningful way.

This does not modify the weighting of the RPI and MaxPreps in the Seeding Index. They both will continue to account for 50% of a team’s final value.

The policy section of the 2023-24 Bylaws book has been updated. The CHSAA Seeding Index page will reflect this modification.
