WINDSOR - With the first round of the 3A Boys Golf State Championship at RainDance National Resort & Golf in Windsor in the books, Resurrection Christian has commanding control of the team lead, shooting 8-over 224.

The Cougars were led by sophomores Jack Carter and Clint Summers, and junior Graham Riggs. Carter finished second, and shot 2-over 74, with two birdies. Meanwhile, Summers and Riggs tied for third and shot 3-over 75.

Leading the way for the individuals, and for the second-place Peak to Peak Pumas, was junior Om Mathur. Mathur was the only competitor to score under par on the day, shooting 2-under 70, thanks to his eagle on the third hole and five additional birdies.

Seniors Rudiger Heitz, representing the fifth-place Holy Family Tigers, and Peyton Walker, representing the seventh-place Eaton Reds, finished the first day knotted up as the fifth-place individuals, after both shot 5-over 77.

In seventh place, right behind those two seniors, was junior Vince Lopez of Montezuma Cortez. Thanks to shooting 6-over 78, Lopez helped Montezuma Cortez finish sixth among teams. Right behind Lopez was a five-way tie for eighth place, as Vail Mountain senior Stewie Bruce, Sterling senior Will Bornhoft, Berthoud sophomore Ezra Keller, D'Evelyn senior Taj Kumar, and Pagosa Springs sophomore Johnathon Smith all shot 7-over 79 in the first round.
