4A boys golf: Weinmaster wins playoff, Cheyenne Mountain takes home team title

WINDSOR – For a few moments, Bradley Weinmaster thought his day had ended in disappointment.
Ā
The Riverdale Ridge junior had shot a 1-over 72 final round and it at least appeared that he would finish runner-up in the Class 4A boys golf state championships. However, due to a scoring mistake on Ponderosa senior Zane Aiken’s card, Weinmaster was given a second chance.Ā
Ā
In fact, Weinmaster, Aiken, Denver North senior Sawyer Klein and Windsor sophomore Kellen Ball were all given another opportunity. The quartet of golfers had each finished at 144 strokes at the end of their 36thĀ hole of the two-day tournament to force a playoff tiebreaker on the par-4 18thĀ hole. Aided by a pair of strong putts to close, Weinmaster’s tears of defeat turned into tears of joy when he was the only golfer to par, earning him the individual crown.Ā
Ā
ā€œI don't know if there's words for it because this is every kid's dream,ā€ said Weinmaster, who shot three birdies in his final round. ā€œEveryone who wants to play always wants to win state and now I did. This is surreal.ā€
Ā
Weinmaster’s desire for a state title was heightened after he struggled down the stretch of last year’s state meet and finished 10th.
Ā
ā€œI wanted it so bad after dropping it last year,ā€ Weinmaster said. ā€œI believed last year and that just ate at me to where I wasn't happy with myself if I didn't win every tournament.ā€
Ā
With the tiebreaker, Aiken, Klein and Ball all finished in a three-way tie for second place.Ā
Ā
Weinmaster’s Ravens finished runners-up (449 strokes) on the team side to Cheyenne Mountain (445), which won its second state title in three years. The Red-Tailed Hawks were carried by ninth-place finishers sophomore Charlie Doyle and senior Thomas Herholtz (5-over), 11thĀ place senior Kale Parthen (6-over) and 13thĀ place senior Carter Surofchek (8-over). Herholtz and Surofchek were also members of the 2020 state-winning team.Ā
Ā
Cheyenne Mountain head coach John Cariccato was proud of his team’s ability to take care of business on the road after winning the 2020 title on its home course.Ā
Ā
ā€œI think that's what I'll take away from this more than anything, is that it just wasn't a home course win (in 2020) and that we actually went on the road and got the W,ā€ Cariccato said.Ā
Ā
Cariccato added that when his lead first-round golfer Herholtz struggled on the back-nine of his second round, his other Red-Tailed Hawks picked up their game at a needed time.Ā
Ā
ā€œIn the back-nine, where he (Herholtz) bogeyed a few holes, it kind of took him out of that individual contention, but he still finished strong for the team,ā€ Cariccato said. ā€œHe's been doing that all year, and so his teammates saw that he had struggled on those first few holes on the back-nine, and they stepped up and took care of him. That was cool to see.ā€Ā
Ā
Montrose took third with 454 points.Ā
