PUEBLO – After a full first day at the 4A boys tennis state championships, held at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Complex, the team race is shaping up to be a dandy.
Kent Denver leads the field after day one with 17 points, while right behind them are a whole host of hungry teams waiting to strike. Cheyenne Mountain trails by just two points, while Colorado Academy has 13, defending champions Niwot has 10, and D’Evelyn has nine.
Kent Denver and Cheyenne Mountain are no strangers to battling it out at the top, as they have combined to win 27 of the 29 4A championships all-time.
A key battle in the team race will come at No. 2 doubles, as that is the only scheduled head-to-head matchup between the two schools. Both teams also lead the field with five semifinalists each.
Leading the Sun Devils is super freshman Nathan Gold, who is the only freshman to make the singles semifinals. The young Gold has blitzed his way through the regular season, as he owns wins over a majority of the top 5A singles players.
Championship semifinals at all positions will begin at 9 a.m. followed by playback matches.
