No. 3 Montrose football is now 7-0 after beating Denver South

MONTROSE — No. 3 Montrose football pushed its perfect record to 7-0 on Friday with a win over Denver South, 44-14.

“I am really proud of the entire team tonight,” Montrose Brett Mertens said. “I thought we did a nice job of running the ball and controlling the line of scrimmage. It was a good team win.”

Tied at seven after the first quarter, Montrose used a big second quarter to push its lead to 24-7. The team got touchdowns from Cole Simmons and Keagan Goodwin, and a 35-yard field goal from Landon Ruiz-Diaz, in the frame.

Things only continued to go that way as the third quarter opened, when Goodwin found Chris Eckerman for a 28-yard touchdown pass to make it 31-7. After Denver South made it 31-14, Montrose’s Elijah Evans scored a 60-yard touchdown, and then Goodwin hit Cauy Boulden to make it 44-14 before the final frame.

“The offensive line did a great job of blocking for our running backs,” Boulden said. “They continued to block down-field and they protected the quarterback.”

Denver South is now 2-5 this season.

“We have played well against the run, so I thought we could stay in the game,” Rebels coach Ryan Marini said. “We knew this was athletic lines in the state. We were right.”
