In wake of bus crash, Legacy football will play its game this Friday
The Legacy High School community is still reeling from a bus crash last weekend involving its football teams. However, the school announced on Tuesday that it would play its varsity game against Prairie View on Friday as originally scheduled.
A bus carrying Legacy’s junior varsity team and some varsity coaches crashed at Denver International Airport on Sunday after the team returned home from playing Chino Hills in California. The bus driver, Kari Chopper, died in the crash. Three coaches — head coach Wayne Voorhees, offensive coordinator Matt Kroupa, and assistant Kyle Rider — were in critical condition and remained in the hospital as of Tuesday.
Defensive coordinator Matt Craddock will serve as interim coach while Voorhees recovers, according to David Krause of the Denver Post.
Friday’s game with Prairie View is Legacy’s homecoming game. It is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
The junior varsity game against Prairie View on Friday has been canceled, while a freshman game Saturday is tentatively on as scheduled, according to Adams 12 School District.
Legacy started its season with a 14-9 win over rival Broomfield, then lost 28-24 to Chino Hills last Thursday.
In a letter to the community written on Monday, Adams 12 Superintendent Chris Gdowski wrote, “As both your superintendent and a parent in the district, I’m feeling what you’re feeling. The entire Five Star community is in this together and we need to continue to lean on each other.”
The outpouring of support from around the state has been something to behold, with schools and teams sending posters and well wishes to Legacy. Boulder and Legacy play in boys soccer on Tuesday, and Boulder has asked its fans to wear blue in support of Legacy during the game.
