Holy Family’s Chris Helbig sets state passing record with 607 yards
Holy Family senior Chris Helbig set the state passing record on Friday, throwing for 607 yards in a win against Mountain View.
Helbig’s total, which came on 29-of-45 passing, breaks the old mark of 589 yards, set by Air Academy’s Adam Brown just last season. His previous career high was 491 yards, which came almost exactly one year prior to this latest performance — Sept. 5, 2014 against Discovery Canyon.
Last season, he had two games for more than 400 yards passing, and five of more than 300.
His single-season total of 3,117 yards ranks No. 11 all-time in the state football record book. Helbig has two other entries in that record book: The 491 yards are the 12th most, and he had a game against Mead last October where he completed 80.8 percent of his passes, which is the seventh-best mark in state history.
Helbig is also a standout basketball player. He averaged 18.2 points, 3.1 assists and 3.0 steals per game last season in helping Holy Family go 20-5. In fact, Helbig is getting interest from college football and basketball programs.
Holy Family’s football team, now 1-0, is ranked No. 4 in Class 3A.
