AURORA - The second round of the Colorado High School Activities Association's 5A Boys Basketball State Championship was played Friday night.

There were a number of thrillers, including No. 28 Palmer Ridge knocking off No. 5 Cheyenne Mountain 52-51, and No. 14 Green Mountain rallying in the closing seconds for a 60-58 victory over No. 19 Mullen.

Green Mountain trailed 58-57 before Sam Mielenz scored on a layup following a backdoor cut for a 59-58 lead with 4.4 seconds left and, after a turnover, Mielenz made a free throw with 1.3 seconds left for the game's final points.

Additionally, No. 1 Palisade survived a scare against No. 33 Pueblo County, winning 47-45 as a long 3-point attempt at the buzzer went off the rim following Carter Hayward's two free throws with 2.5 seconds that broke a tie.

The tournament's third round will be played at home sites on Tuesday, followed by the quarterfinals at the Denver Coliseum on Saturday, March 7 for 5A. The semifinals are Thursday, March 12 and the championship game is Saturday, March 14.
