Boys Basketball: First Round Updates for 5A, 6A

AURORA - The first round of the Colorado High School Activities Association's Boys Basketball State Championship has been completed for both the 5A and 6A classifications.

There were six upsets among the 16 first-round contests played, with three in the 6A bracket and three in 5A. The biggest upset was in 5A, as No. 39 Dakota Ridge got past No. 26 Pueblo East, 56-40. No. 36 Coronado also defeated No. 29 Thomas Jefferson, 73-58, while No. 33 Pueblo County edged No. 32 Aurora Central, 57-51.

In 6A, No. 34 Heritage knocked off No. 31 Fountain-Fort Carson, 74-62, No. 35 Erie defeated No. 30 Rocky Mountain, 70-66, and No. 33 Fairview knocked off No. 32 Legend, 58-55.

All second round games will be played on Friday, Feb. 27 at the home sites of the higher seed with the winners advancing to the Sweet 16 at home sites on Tuesday, March 3. The Great 8 will be hosted at the Denver Coliseum on Friday, March 6 for 6A and Saturday, March 7 for 5A, followed by the semifinals on Thursday, March 12 and the championship games on Saturday, March 14.
