Skiing: Battle Mountain's Younger DeMino Wins Slalom, Summit Takes Team Title

VAIL – There’s another champion in the DeMino household, as Battle Mountain sophomore Eden DeMino won the girls slalom on Friday at the CHSAA Alpine State Championships, matching the giant slalom crown earned last year by her sister Ruth.

DeMino helped Battle Mountain finish second in the team standings behind Summit, which won its 23rd state skiing championship and first since Alpine and Nordic were split into separate championships last year.

Eden DeMino opened with the best run of the day of 37.03 and had the best second run of the day of 40.73 to finish with a combined time of 1:17.76 that was more than two seconds better than second-place sophomore Lauren Leffel of Summit (1:19.92). Summit also had the third-place finisher in freshman Kaia Riter (1:22.34).

While the DeMino sisters were 1-2 in the giant slalom last year, they settled for 1-5 this time around, as Ruth, a senior, had times of 39.28 and 43.29 to finish at 1:22.57,  just behind freshman teammate Mia Eaton (1:22.48).

The rest of the top 10 was: junior Marloes Adriaanse of Middle Park (sixth, 1:22.90); sophomore Lucille Dietrich of Steamboat Spring (seventh, 1:22.93); freshman Caroline Brownson of Summit (eighth, 1:23.32); sophomore Ava Somers of Aspen (ninth, 1:24.59) and senior Rocksy Kroeger of Aspen (10th, 1:24.73).

Summit earned the top four spots in Wednesday’s giant slalom and had a solid lead heading into the second round.

In the final team scoring, Summit finished with 347 points and Battle Mountain – Alpine runner-up for the second straight year – won a spirited battle for second with 316. Aspen was third with 313 and Middle Park placed fourth with 311. Steamboat Springs was fifth with 299.

The Nordic State Championships are Friday and Saturday at Snow Mountain Ranch near Granby.
