Dave Sanders Memorial Softball Tournament in full swing at Aurora Sports Park

AURORA — It’s where every high school softball team in the state wants to be Saturday, Oct. 25 — Aurora Sports Park.

The annual Dave Sanders Memorial Softball Tournament co-hosted by Columbine and Lakewood got into full swing Friday morning at Aurora Sports Park. A total of 22 games involving 16 teams from across the state were played at the site of the state tournaments in a little less than two months.

A pair of morning games between powerhouses went extra innings. Holy Family edged Grandview 4-3 in 10 innings, while Columbine suffered a 4-3 loss to Windsor in 9 innings. Windsor’s Emma Hungerford has a pinch-hit 2-run walk-off home run for the Wizards.

Lakewood suffered its first loss of the season in walk-off fashion against Fruita-Monument. The Wildcats scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to take a 9-8 victory.

The tournament will continue Saturday with 16 more games starting at 9 a.m. The championship game is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. in Aurora.
