Joe Brown Positioned to Lead New Board of Directors

AURORA – Joe Brown, the Athletic Director and Assistant Principal at Niwot High School, was elected to serve as the next president of the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Board of Directors at the association’s Spring Legislative Council Meeting in April. He assumes his duties today, July 1, from outgoing board president, Ryan West.

“I am incredibly honored to be able to serve the membership in this capacity,” Brown stated. “The trust the membership and the Board of Directors has placed in me to lead from this position is incredibly humbling. I look forward to this opportunity and to continue to lead CHSAA in a positive direction.

“I also look forward to continuing the positive mission and vision of the CHSAA office and growing the relationship with all member schools across our great state.”

In addition to Brown assuming his role as president, CHSAA also welcomes nine new members to its Board of Directors: Melissa Barber (Caplan & Earnest), James Coleman (Colorado Legislature), Reed Doughty (Athletic Director, Flatirons Academy), Sam Jones-Rogers (Caplan & Earnest), Trent Kerr (Superintendent, Wiggins School District), Dan Melendrez (Superintendent, Genoa-Hugo School District), Al Melo (Activities Director, Harrison), Elly Naill (Assistant Principal/Athletics and Activities Director, Pueblo East), and Patrick Simpson (Executive Director of Athletics and Activities, Jeffco Public Schools).

“We are thrilled to welcome our new and incoming Board of Directors members and look forward to the insight, strengths, and talents they bring not only to our Board but to the CHSAA membership. I also want to offer a special welcome to our new Board President, Joe Brown, whose steady leadership and deep commitment to educationally based athletics make him an ideal person to help guide our work moving forward," CHSAA Commissioner Mike Krueger said. "We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing Board members, whose service and dedication have left a meaningful mark on our Association. The CHSAA Board continues to be a strong and influential voice for educationally based athletics and activities. This dedicated group of leaders recognizes the strength that comes from the diversity of our schools and communities, whether in size, location, or perspective, and strives to model and remind us that we are united in a shared purpose of supporting students through participation opportunities.”

For the next two years, Brown will lead the Board, which represents member schools, leagues, districts and associations with the collective goal of fostering the health and development of high school activities in Colorado. Brown’s term is set to cover the 2025-26 and 2026-27 school years.
