AURORA -- The opening round of the 5A girls soccer state tournament began Tuesday, with 13 of the 16 scheduled games played and the other three set for Wednesday.
There were four one-goal games, including No. 12 Columbine's 2-1 win over No. 21 Cherokee Trail, No. 10 Broomfield edging No. 23 ThunderRidge 2-1; No. 17 Fairview's 2-1 win over No. 16 Regis Jesuit; and No. 9 Boulder's 1-0 victory against No. 24 Horizon.
Also Tuesday, No. 1 Mountain Vista defeated No. 32 Poudre, 2-0; No. 2 Cherry Creek was a 6-1 winner over No. 31 Liberty; No. 4 Ralston Valley beat No. 29 Fort Collins, 3-0; No. 5 Fossil Ridge was a 5-0 winner over No. 28 Arvada West; No. 6 Castle View was a 6-0 winner over No. 27 Fruita Monument; No. 7 Rock Canyon topped No. 26 Grandview, 2-0; No. 11 Heritage beat No. 22 Denver South, 3-1; No. 13 Legacy beat No. 20 Denver East, 2-0; and No. 15 Northfield topped No. 18 Erie, 3-0. On Wednesday, No. 3 Pine Creek defeated No. 30 Legend, 3-0; No. 8 Valor Christian beat No. 25 Chaparral 2-0; and No. 14 Arapahoe plays No. 19 Denver North.
In second-round games scheduled for Friday, No. 1 Mountain Vista plays No. 17 Fairview; No. 2 Cherry Creek faces No. 15 Northfield; No. 3 Pine Creek plays the No. 14 Arapahoe-No. 19 Denver North winner; No. 4 Ralston Valley plays No. 13 Legacy; No. 5 Fossil Ridge takes on No. 12 Columbine; No. 6 Castle View plays No. 11 Heritage; No. 7 Rock Canyon faces No. 10 Broomfield; and the No. 8 Valor Christian-No. 25 Chaparral winner plays No. 9 Boulder.
First-round matches get started Wednesday in 4A and 2A, while 3A first-round contests are scheduled for Thursday.
