Esports: Round of 16 Bracket for In-Person Super Smash Bros. State Championship Set

AURORA - The Round of 16 portion of the in-person championship bracket has been set for the CHSAA Esports State Championships for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The in-person finals will be played on Thursday, April 24 at Localhost in Lakewood. Play will begin with the Round of 16 games at 9 a.m., followed by the quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m., the semifinals at noon and the championship finals at 1:30 p.m.

This will mark the third esports state championship for Super Smash Bros., as Rocky Mountain won the inaugural title in 2023, defeating Grandview in the finals. Grandview then won the 2024 championship, with Mountain Vista taking second. 

Grandview will return to Localhost in quest of a third-straight trophy, while Rocky Mountain will look to recapture the crown. There will also be a team from Abraham Lincoln, Air Academy, Arrupe Jesuit, Aurora Central, Cherry Creek, Dayspring Christian, Douglas County, Fort Collins, Fossil Ridge, George Washington, Highlands Ranch, Lakewood, Ponderosa and Prairie View looking to win its first title in Super Smash Bros.  

The 34th-seeded DCHS Varsity Smash team from Douglas County has recorded the biggest upset of the tournament so far, knocking the No. 2 seed from Valor Christian - Valor A Team - out in the second round after eliminating No. 31 PCHS_01_Smash from Pine Creek in the first round. 

No. 39 FCHS Smash A from Fort Collins has also made its way to the 16-team in-person event after logging a pair of upsets, including a win over No. 26 Pueblo West Smash Varsity (Pueblo West) in the first round and No. 7 North Smash A (Denver North) in the second round. 

Other upsets include No. 21 King Falcons (Highlands Ranch) over No. 12 Smash Team Varsity (Vista PEAK Prep), No. 20 Gastric Doctors (Grandview) instead of No. 13 PH ISH (Rangeview), No. 19 Dayspring Eagles (Dayspring Christian) eliminating No. 14 Royal (Legend) and No. 17 Fossil Ridge Varsity Smash Bros (Fossil Ridge) edging out No. 16 Filibuster LHS Varsity B (Lakewood).  

The Esports State Championships for Mario Kart will also take place at Localhost on April 24. The inaugural unified championship will be played at 10:30 a.m., while the third-annual Mario Kart championship will be at approximately 5 p.m.

Trophy and awards presentations will take place after each individual final.

On overall esports state titles across all five games, Cherry Creek, Grandview and Rocky Mountain have all won two, while Cherokee Trail, Denver East, Mountain Vista, Pueblo West and Valor Christian have one apiece. No team has won the same title more than once.
