THORNTON - If there was any question to who's the best gymnast in the state, Arvada West's Layla Petz erased that doubt Saturday afternoon at the individual event finals of the 5A Gymnastics State Championships.
In addition to
winning the all-around title at the team championships Thursday night, Petz swept all four individual event titles at Thornton High School on Saturday to become the 14th gymnast in CHSAA state history – and just the eighth at the 5A level – to win all four individual event titles and the all-around at the same championship.
"It's definitely special… it feels good," Petz said about becoming the first gymnast since 2018 to sweep each of the individual event titles. "There's been a lot of amazing gymnasts to come through the programs, and to be one that is kind of in the books is incredibly exciting. I'm so proud of myself."
Heading into this year's event finals, a trend was starting to emerge with the floor exercise requiring a perfect 10 for victory, as Frankie MacAskill (Mountain Range, 2024) and Lauren Burt (Lakewood, 2023) won each of the last two titles with perfect scores. Petz kept the streak alive by posting a perfect score in her first event of the day.
"I was so happy," Petz said of seeing the 10.000 on the board. "I've been chasing that 10 on really any event for the last season. We've got some 9.9s, so it was really rewarding to see that my hard work paid off, and I did what I came out here to do."
Petz followed up her floor routine with winning scores of 9.775 on beam and 9.725 on uneven bars, before capping off the day with a 9.825 score on the vault.
"Coming off of winning [the all-around] last year, I was definitely trying to bring it back full circle, but I was really focused on having fun. It's my senior season," Petz said. "I came in today with nothing to lose, and I had my best meet of the season. I wouldn't want to end my career any other way."
For her career, Petz has won seven individual state championships – two as junior and five as a senior – to become the 19th person in state history to win at least seven state titles.
"I did, yes," Petz admitted when asked if she left it all on the floor. "I'm sad [its over], but it ended great, so I couldn't be prouder of myself."
Broomfield dominated the vault, placing three gymnasts in the top five of the event, as Liliana Wojahn took second (9.500), Audrina Zanella third (9.450) and Keira La Hue fifth (9.325). Wojahn also finished fifth on bars (9.250) and Miata Santos was third on floor (9.475).
For Mountain Range, Ella Mikolajewski finished second on bars (9.625) and floor (9.700) and was third on beam (9.400), while Rachel Price was third on bars (9.425) and Lexi Mowry took fourth on floor (9.400).
Chatfield's Marcela Gonzalez Moreno took second on beam, with a score of 9.600, while teammate Lauren Oakeson was fourth on beam (9.350) and fifth on floor (9.400).
Rock Canyon's Callista Larson finished fourth on bars (9.400), while Valor Christian's Lauren Becker took fourth on vault (9.375) and Poudre's Kate Gundelfinger rounded out the top five on beam, with a score of 9.275.
