THORNTON – After winning the Class 5A all-around gymnastics title as a junior, Arvada West’s Layla Petz had a full offseason to plot and plan how she might orchestrate the encore performance she hoped to deliver.
In the end, the Arvada West senior determined the tried and true model of hard work and determination that won her first all-around title was the same path to a second. With that in mind as she arrived at Thornton High School on Thursday, Petz posted a winning score of 38.300 to claim her second straight individual all-around title.
“It’s just exciting, getting to bring it full-circle,” Petz said. “I got it last year and then getting to still work super hard was really rewarding. It wasn’t a give-me. I didn’t come in knowing I was going to win, so it was great to see all of my work pay off just like it did last year. This year was a little more stressful, but I tried to live in the moment more because it’s my last year.
“I definitely went out there and had a lot more fun. I had my best season and our team did amazing. It’s a great way to end my senior year.”
Petz scored a 9.725 on vault, a 9.225 on bars, a 9.550 on beam and a 9.880 on floor.
“The last two years, this has been a goal of hers,” Arvada West head coach Lori Hayes said. “She puts in the work in the offseason and we always try to come up with something new to make her stand out from all the other gymnasts. She’s always striving to be her best.”
Mountain Range’s Ella Mikolajewski finished runner-up in the all-around with a score of 37.550. Broomfield’s Liliana Mojahn finished third with a score of 37.500.
Valor Christian’s Lauren Becker (37.025) was fourth and Chatfield’s Marcel Gonzalez Moreno (36.675) was fifth.
