AURORA - An exciting first day of the Colorado High School Activities Association's Girls Volleyball State Championships has been completed.
Teams that did not lose Thursday have advanced to the third round of the Winners bracket, while those who have lost once remain alive in the Contenders bracket.
Friday's play at the Denver Coliseum will begin at 8 a.m. with first-round matches of the Contenders bracket in every classification, followed by the third round of the winners bracket at approximately 2 p.m. The day will wrap up with the second round of the Contenders bracket.

State champions in all five classifications will be crowned on Saturday. Semifinal matches are scheduled for Satuday at noon and 2 p.m., with the championship matches set for 6 p.m.
Class 5A
In 5A, No. 1 seed Fossil Ridge rolled to a 3-0 victory over No. 8 Pine Creek (25-9, 25-9, 25-18) and has been joined in the third round by defending state champion and No. 2 Valor Christian, No. 3 Rock Canyon and No. 5 Rampart.
Rampart edged No. 4 Legend 3-1 (25-11, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21) after opening the day with a 3-1 win over No. 12 Niwot (25-15, 25-19, 21-25, 25-14). Rock Canyon defeated No. 6 Ralston Valley 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-13, 25-23) and Valor Christian swept No. 7 Chaparral 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-16).
In other first round matches, Chaparral outlasted No. 10 Denver South 3-2 (25-16, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-9), Ralston Valley defeated No. 11 Dakota Ridge 3-1 (25-27, 25-20, 26-24, 25-16) and Pine Creek swept No. 9 Loveland 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-17).
Class 4A
In 4A, No. 1 seed Montrose swept No. 8 Battle Mountain 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-23) to move into the third round, where it will face No. 4 Lutheran, a 3-0 winner (25-17, 25-19, 25-17) over No. 12 Standley Lake. Standley Lake had knocked off No. 5 Lewis-Palmer 3-1 (16-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-22) to move into the second round. In the other semifinal, No. 3 seed University is coming off a 3-2 win (21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13) over No. 11 Cheyenne Mountain and will play No. 2 Windsor, which defeated No. 7 Berthoud 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-15).
Cheyenne Mountain pulled another first-round surprise in 4A, defeating No. 6 Mullen 3-1 (14-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20). Also in the first round, Berthoud outlasted No. 10 Green Mountain 3-1 (21-25, 27-25, 25-20, 27-25) and Battle Mountain edged No. 9 Mead 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22).
Class 3A
In 3A, The Village -- defending state champions seeded No. 12 -- knocked off No. 5 Stargate School 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-23) in the first round and then took down No. 4 Forge Christian 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-22) to reach the third round. Top seed Alamosa dropped the second set against No. 8 Sterling, but recovered for a 3-1 win (25-21, 25-27, 25-13, 25-18) and now faces The Village. Also moving into the third round is No. 3 Eaton, a 3-1 winner (25-16, 25-17, 21-25, 25-12) over No. 6 Bayfield, and No. 7 The Classical Academy, which pulled a 3-2 reverse sweep win (20-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-17, 15-13) over No. 2 Resurrection Christian.
In other first-round matches, Bayfield beat No. 11 Aspen 3-1 (25-9, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20), The Classical Academy topped No. 10 Centauri 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-15, 25-19) and Sterling defeated No. 9 Gunnison 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-19).
Class 2A
In 2A, No. 1 seed Simla was a 3-0 winner against No. 8 Wiggins (25-14, 25-22, 25-18), and also advancing were No. 2 Denver Christian, No. 4 Holyoke and No. 6 Swink.
Swink was a 3-1 winner over No. 3 Dolores (25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 25-13) after beating No. 11 Vail Christian 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-13) in its opener.
Denver Christian rallied for a 3-2 reverse-sweep win (20-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-12) over defending state champion and No. 7 Sedwick County.
No. 12 Yuma pulled the only first-round surprise, defeating No. 5 Sanford 3-1 (21-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-14), then nearly took down Holyoke before falling 3-2 (25-13, 23-25, 25-16, 14-25, 15-13). In other first-round matches, Wiggins swept No. 9 Buena Vista 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-5) and Sedgwick County swept No. 10 Ignacio 3-0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-20).
Class 1A
In 1A, No. 1 seed Merino defeated No. 8 Sargent 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-9), No. 2 seed and defending state champion McClave swept No. 10 Prairie 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-19), No. 3 Fleming beat No. 6 Stratton 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-19), and No. 4 Flatirons Academy edged No. 5 Granada 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 12-25, 25-17, 15-9).
Earlier, Granada beat No. 12 Caliche 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20). Prairie, celebrating the 50th anniversary of a championship at the first state tournament, beat No. 7 Hi-Plains 3-1 in the first round (19-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21). Other first-round matches saw Sargent top No. 9 Evangel Christian Academy 3-1 (25-20, 25-13, 21-25, 25-18) and Stratton beat No. 11 Plateau Valley 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 24-26, 25-15).
