PUEBLO - The semifinal round for the 4A Boys Tennis Individual State Championships is set following Thursday's opening day. Play at Pueblo Cithy Park resumes Friday at 9 a.m., with the championship finals and third-place matches scheduled for Saturday.
Semfinalists won two matches Thursday to advance. Playback matches are scheduled for Friday as well.
Colorado Academy has advanced all seven lines to the semifinals, while Kent Denver and Peak to Peak each advanced five with three head-to-head matchups slated in the semifinals. Grand Junction has three semifinalists.
In No. 1 singles, sophomore Nithesh Karuppasamy of D'Evelyn has advanced to face senior Andrew Rettig of George Washington. Karuppsasamy reached the semifinals with aa 6-1, 6-0 victory over Josiah Brittenham of Frederick, while Rettig defeated Colorado Springs School's Leopold Laird, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
The other semifinal pits senior Vivaan Bhardwaj of Peak to Peak and sophomore Bennett Neely of Colorado Academy. Bhardwaj defeated Kent Denver junior Noah Bogel 6-4, 6-2, while Neely was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over sophomore Elijah Wright of Colorado Academy.
In No. 2 singles, senior Liam O'Drobniak of Kent Denver will play junior Shreyas Sundaresan of Peak to Peak in one semifinal, while the other pits seniors Oliver Neely of Colorado Academy and Oskar Hansen of Niwot.
O'Drobniak defeated senior Patton Truchel of Evergreen 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, while Sundaresan beat Jacob Smith of Grand Junction 6-2, 6-4, Neely topped freshman Nathan Ohl of Air Academy 6-3, 6-3 and Hansen was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Sam Eikenberry of George Washington.
In No. 3 singles, there's another Kent Denver vs. Peak to Peak clash, as sophomore Vyaan Chopra plays freshman Cody Palmer. Kent Denver's Chopra beat Josh Curtiss of Coronado 6-0, 6-0, while Peak to Peak's Palmer was a 7-5, 6-2 winner over sophomore Layne Berger of Lewis-Palmer.
The other semfinal sees George Washington sophomore Aaron Whiteley playing Colorado Academy senior Craig Stapleton. Whiteley edged Grand Junction sophomore Grant Gear 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, while Stapleton was a 6-0, 6-1 victor against Palmer Ridge sophomore Wilson Mancini.
In No. 1 doubles, the Colorado Academy duo of Hendrik Jordaan and Peter Owen will face the Grand Junction tandem of Gareth Keller and Ben Miller. Jordaan/Owen had a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Matt Holliger and Ben Parsons of George Washington, while Keller/Miller's quarterfinal win was 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 over Peak to Peak's Dmitri Zaronias and Noah Swartz.
The other semifinal includes Reid Calamari and Levi Pollyea of Kent Denver facing Dylan Reeb and Simon Czarnecki of D'Evelyn. Calamari/Pollyea scored a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win over Jackson Gallaher and Micah Mays of Evergreen in the quarterfinals, while the Reeb/Czarnecki quarterfinal victory was 6-0, 6-4 against Thomas Jefferson's Andrew Van Abbema and Oli Franco.
In No. 2 doubles, Colorado Academy's Jay Bhandari and Luka Jovanovic will play Evergreen's Hayden Hayes and Andy Fleet in one semifinal. Bhandari/Jovanovic were 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 quarterfinal winners over Cael Parker and Daniel Sias of D'Evelyn, while the Evergreen duo rallied to defeat Maximus Kintz and Walker Aggen of Grand Junction 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The other semifinal pits Adi Gaur and Anders Todd against Jake Silverman and Noah Landrey in another Peak to Peak vs. Kent Denver showdown. Gaur/Todd of Peak to Peak went the distance to beat George Washington's Graham Turner and Evan Fishbein 6-3, 1-6, 7-6, while the Kent Denver pairing defeated Clarke Shields and Matthew Raval of Mullen 6-2, 6-1 in the quarters.
In No. 3 doubles, Colorado Academy's CJ Marshall and Thomas Rollhaus will play Peak to Peak's Marcos Lopez Flaus and Damian Gorsevski in one semifinal. Marshall/Rollahus won 6-0, 6-3 over Mullen's Cooper Wurst and Jack Shields in the quarterfinals, while Lopez Flaus/Gorsevski defeated Jake Wiens and Niko Singh of George Washington 6-2, 6-1.
The other semifinal sees Jude Knaysi and Oliver Keller of Grand Junction facing the Evergreen pairing of Gordon Salmen and Sage Chapman. Knaysi/Keller earned a 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 decision over James Sanders and Ryan Park of D'Evelyn in the quarterfinals, while Salmen/Chapman topped Ollie Nelson and Sohan De of Kent Denver 6-3, 6-3.
And in No. 4 doubles, Kent Denver's pairing of Suleman Ismail and Danny Friedman Valenzuela will face Grand Junction's Witt Reddin and Zach Nelson in one semifinal, with Alexander Pruisner and Steven Welte of Mullen playing Elliot Brown and Mitchell Sindler of Colorado Academy in the other.
The Kent Denver team defeated George Washington's Carson Cramer and Michael DePaulo 6-4, 6-1 in the quarters, the Grand Junction team beat Discovery Canyon's Elijah Baty and Carter Coffey 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, Pruisner/Welte topped Beckett Hemmer and Alex Fleet of Evergreen 6-2, 6-0, and the Colorado Academy team beat Logan Alfonso and Mitch Pinto of D'Evelyn 6-3, 7-5.
