AURORA - The 2024-25 bylaws for the Colorado High School Activities Association went into effect as of July 1.
The major bylaw changes for this upcoming year include:
The timeline for the Classification of Schools has been pushed back to allow for enrollment and success data to be timelier and more accurate:
- CHSAA classification enrollment ranges for each activity are approved by the Legislative Council in January preceding the beginning of the two-year classification cycle instead of three years prior to the classification cycle.
- The CHSAA Commissioners will set classifications based on Bylaw 1500.11/1500.21 and present to the CHSAA membership in October of the odd numbered years preceding the beginning of the two-year classification cycle.
- In September of the odd numbered year of the two-year cycle, schools will declare the activities for each gender in which they will compete for the next two-year cycle.
- A school failing to meet the designated deadline for declarations shall be subject to late penalties and shall not be permitted to appeal any classification placements.
- The school may also request a change in classification placement directly from the Legislative Council; such an exception requires a favorable vote of two-thirds of those council members voting.
- Classification enrollment ranges for the upcoming declaration cycle in all sports will be determined as defined in 1500.2. The Legislative Council in even numbered years will consider the enrollment ranges as recommended by the CHSAA Commissioners and approved by the CLOC.
In addition, beginning in 2024-25, flag football will be introduced with two classifications, while boys volleyball and girls wrestling will increase to two classifications and girls and boys golf will expand to four classifications each.
All coaches (regardless of role and/or compensation) will now be required to attend/watch annually a CHSAA approved rules clinic in their sport prior to the start of the first interscholastic contest. The penalty will be a coach placed on probation for their first offense, restriction for subsequent offenses.
In order to maintain consistency in scheduling championship dates
, the spring sports practice, scrimmage and competition start dates will fall out of line with the NFHS calendar and be modified to remain consistent with other years. During these years (2024-25, 2025-26, 2030-31, etc.), boys volleyball and boys swimming and diving will start on Week 33 and the remaining spring sports will start on Week 34.
Individual sport changes include flag football being added as a fall sport for girls beginning in 2024-25, the first football competition date being moved to the Thursday of Week 7, the ice hockey season beginning on the Monday of Week 19 and the first ice hockey scrimmage date being the Saturday of Week 19.
The Tournament & Playoff Finance Structure is also changing away from the current structure of paying a percentage of playoff gate revenue to a set fee paid by all schools depending on their classification.
