4A Girls Golf Regionals Round Up: State Qualifiers Secured in All Four Regions

AURORA - The 4A girls golf regional championships got underway on Monday in two of the four regionals with four of the eight automatic qualifiers being determined throughout the day. 

Lutheran (Region 1) and Northfield (Region 2) both claimed regional championships, while Cheyenne Mountain and Pueblo West finished runner-up in its respective regions to claim a team spot in the upcoming state championships. The top-two finishers from Region 3 and Region 4 will be determined on Tuesday and will round out the eight automatic qualifiers for the state championships.

In addition, the top-13 individual finishers from each of the regions also clinched their spot in the upcoming state championships.  

The 4A Girls Golf State Championship will be held on Monday and Tuesday, May 20-21 at The Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs.
    

Region 1

PUEBLO (May 13) - The Lutheran Lions enjoyed a tremendous day of golf on Monday, as they earned the 4A Girls Region 1 Regional Championship at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, and had all three golfers place among the top-four finishers.

Lutheran sophomore Chace Atkinson was the regional's individual winner, as she shot an even 72 to claim the crown. Finishing third and fourth, respectively, were fellow Lutheran sophomores Tess Morris (4-over 76) and Ava Engelhardt (10-over 82).

The lone member of the top four who didn't belong to Lutheran was Pueblo Central junior Sofia Contreras, who shot 1-over 73.

After Lutheran, the day's top team was Pueblo West, thanks to the Cyclones also boasting three of the regional's top-10 individual finishers. Sophomore Clayre Wagner led the way for Pueblo West, shooting 11-over 83, with fellow sophomores Gabi Benfatti (17-over 89, tied for eighth) and Scotlyn Gamble (18-over 90, tied for 10th) right on her tail.

The remaining top-10 individual golfers were Cañon City senior Abrianna Lippis, who shot 11-over 83 and tied for fifth; Pueblo County senior Katelynn Neal, who shot 14-over 86 and placed seventh; Pueblo County junior Capreese Lisac, who shot 17-over 89 and tied for eighth place; and Palmer Ridge sophomore McKena Anderson, who shot 18-over 90 to tie for 10th.

Rounding out the top-five teams were Palmer Ridge, shooting 75-over 291 and placing third; Pueblo County, shooting 77-over 293 and placing fourth; and Pueblo Central, shooting 88-over 304 and finishing in fifth.

Region 2

BROOMFIELD (May 13) - Littleton sophomore Zoe Bar-Or captured her regional victory by shooting 1-over 73 on the day, to beat out the stiff competition at the 4A Girls Region 2 Regional Championship at Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield on Monday.

Right on Bar-Or's tail were Northfield teammates senior Makaela Swanson, who finished second by shooting 3-over 75, and freshman Chanel Carlacci, who finished third with a eight-over 80 day. Those two and Northfield sophomore Gabrielle Cunningham, who finished ninth and shot 17-over 89, helped power the Nighthawks to the regional's team championship, with Northfield scoring 28-over 244.

Riley Kinsella, the fourth-place individual finisher and a Pomona junior, was the only golfer not belonging to Northfield to finish within 10 strokes of Bar-Or.

Broomfield junior Mia Huerta closed out the day's top-five golfers, thanks to her 12-over 84 performance.

The rest of the event's top-10 individual golfers were Denver South sophomore Addison Blackwood, who shot 13-over 85 and tied for sixth with Cheyenne Mountain senior Karsyn Hulen; Ponderosa sophomore Olivia Meyering, who shot 16-over 88 and placed eighth; and Dakota Ridge senior Bella Kith, who tied Northfield's Cunningham in ninth place by shooting 17-over 89.

Rounding out the top teams after Northfield, you had Cheyenne Mountain finishing in second, after shooting 53-over 269; Ponderosa finishing in third, by shooting 58-over 274; Broomfield finishing in fourth, after shooting 59-over 275; Dakota Ridge in fifth, after shooting 65-over 216.

Region 3

LONGMONT (May 15) - Holy Family placed three golfers in the top 10 and shot 38-over 251 to take home the team crown at the 4A Girls Region 3 Regional Championship at Twin Peaks Golf Course in Longmont on Wednesday.

The Tigers’ golfers that placed inside the top 10 were sophomore Steffi Heitz, who placed third (11-over 82); freshman Acadia Curtis, who placed fourth (13-over 84), and junior Fiona Holmes, who tied for fifth (14-over 85).

Holmes tied for fifth place with Northridge junior Leila Thompson and Niwot junior Alena Kasanicky.

The only other team with multiple golfers in the top 10 was Riverdale Ridge, with the Ravens claiming three of those top spots. Senior Brynn Balliet led the way, placing second and scoring 6-over 77, while senior Ava Edstrom came in eighth, with 87 strokes (16 over), and sophomore Karina Panyavong finished in 10th place (17-over 88). Riverdale Ridge finished second among the teams and just one stroke behind Holy Family, at 39-over 252.

The Windsor Wizards finished third among the teams, with a 46-over 259 performance, but they took home the individual regional championship, thanks to junior Macy Kleve, who shot 2-over 73.

Loveland junior Jordyn Bandemer also finished in the top 10, claiming eighth place after scoring 16-over 87.

The remaining top-five teams were Northridge (fourth place, 53-over 266) and Niwot (60-over 273).

Region 4

DENVER (May 14) - Tuesday was a banner day for the Erie Tigers, at the 4A Girls Region 4 Regional Championship at Foothills Golf Course in Denver.

The Tigers shot 1-over 217 to take home the regional championship and had three golfers place inside the top 10 of the individual leaderboard, including the first and second-place golfers.

Erie senior Logan Hale took home the individual regional championship, scoring a 6-under 66, while junior Hadley Ashton finished in second, with a 4-under 68, and junior Taylor Hale finished in 10th, shooting 11-over 83.

The only player not on Erie to finish at or below par was Vista Peak sophomore Sophia Capua, who shot an even 72.

Mullen finished in a tie for second place among the teams (35-over 251) and placed multiple golfers among the top 10 individuals. Mullen junior Jane Gray led the way, finishing in fifth place with a 6-over 78 score, while fellow junior Riley Sullivan scored 10-over 82 and placed ninth.

Steamboat Springs tied Mullen in second place (35-over 251), with junior Kaitlyn Grommeck placing fourth, thanks to her 5-over 77 performance.

To round out the top-10 individuals, Battle Mountain sophomore Makena Thayer finished in a tie for sixth, with Durango sophomore Jayden Craig, at 8-over 80, and Golden senior Mollie Todd finished in eighth place and shot 9-over 81.

The remaining top-five teams were Durango (36-over 252) finishing in fourth, and Golden (45-over 261) finishing fifth.
