Girls Tennis Individual State Championship Information

LPlease note: the individual state championships are different than the team championship. The 2024 Girls Team Tennis State Championships will be held on Tuesday, May 14 at Denver Tennis Park.

AURORA - The Colorado High School Activities Association will host its 2024 Girls Individual Tennis State Championships on Thursday through Saturday, May 9-11 at three various sites across the state.

The 3A championships will be played at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs, with the 4A championships at Pueblo City Park in Pueblo and 5A at Denver City Park in Denver.

How does a player qualify for the state championships?
Each class (3A, 4A and 5A) will qualify two players (1st and 2nd) in each event from all eight regions. Challenge back matches are possible.

On the state bracket, all regional winners will be paired against a regional finisher with no two teams or individuals from the same region playing each other during the first round.

What is the format of play?
The tournament is a single-elimination bracket, although there is a consolation bracket for individuals who were eliminated by an opponent that reaches the finals.

Each match will be a full two-out-of-three tiebreak sets with a full third set if the first two sets are split.

What is the schedule of events?
Once the tournament begins, play is continuous and may not be suspended for any reason other than severe weather conditions.

Play will begin at 9 a.m. on all three days with Thursday being quarterfinal-round matches. Semifinals and second-round playback matches will take play on Friday, with Saturday being finals and playback finals.

How do playbacks (consolation matches) work?
Playbacks (consolation matches) occur when the player/team that you lose to advances to the finals. After Friday morning’s semifinals are determined, playbacks will immediately begin. The players/teams who lost to the player/team advancing to the finals in the first and/or second round will play each other the first round of playbacks on Friday. The winner of that first round playback match will advance to play the player/team that lost its semifinal match to the player/team advancing to the finals; this will be the second round of playbacks on Friday. The second round playback winners will advance to Saturday and compete for third and fourth place in the playback finals.

For example: Player A beats Player B in the first round, Player C in the second round and Player D in the semifinals. Player B and Player C will face in the first round of playbacks, where Player C wins. Player C advances to play Player D in the second round of playbacks, where Player D wins.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the bracket, Player Z beats Player Y in the first round, Player X in the second round and Player W in the semifinals. Player Y and X face in the first round of playbacks, where Player X wins. Player X and Player W play in the second round of playbacks, where Player W wins.

Player D and Player W will advance to the playback finals to determine third and fourth place, while Player A and Player Z will play in the finals match to determine first and second place.
