CHSAA Celebrates 2023-24 Individual State Champions

AURORA – The Colorado High School Activities Association would like to congratulate its membership for another successful year. Throughout 2023-24, CHSAA awarded 615 individual championships to 479 athletes from 127 different schools across the 15 sports and activities that offer individual championships.

Of those 479 individual champions, 97 won multiple individual championships, 28 won at least three individual championships and 10 different student-athletes won a jaw-dropping count of four individual championships this season.

189 seniors closed their high school careers with an individual state championship, and of those 189, 42 won multiple individual titles in their final seasons. This year’s crop of individual state champions also featured 40 freshmen individual champions, seven of whom won multiple state championships in their first year of high school competition.

Cherokee Trail junior Peyton Sommers won the most individual championships among all male competitors this season, as he captured four, all in track and field — the 5A boys 100m dash, 200m dash, 400m dash and the 4x200m relay.

Liberty Common senior Isabel Allori took home the most individual crowns of anyone though, as she won five individual titles, across both cross country and track and field. Allori finished first in the 3A girls 800m run, 1600m run, 3200m run, 4x800m relay, and 3A girls cross country.

This season’s class of individual champions also includes nine student-athletes who won at least one championship in two different activities, including the aforementioned Allori. Of those nine, only Nkechi Onyejekwe won an individual title in both a sport and an activity, as she earned the state crown in both 4A speech and debate and 4A track and field.

The other seven athletes to win a state championship in two different sports were Will Brunner (cross country and track and field), Nadhia Campos (cross country and track and field), Matthew Edwards (cross country and track and field), Judd Harvey (wrestling and track and field), Rosie Mucharsky (cross country and track and field), Addison Ritzenhein (cross country and track and field) and Grant Statz (wrestling and track and field).

Additional highlights throughout the year include:

• Ciara Monger (Calhan) and Persaeus Gomez (Pomona) became the first girl wrestlers in Colorado history to win four state championships during their high school tenure. D’Mitri Garza-Alarcon (Fort Lupton) and Dale O’Blia (Mullen) also earned the illustrious title of ‘four-time state champions’ this season.
• D’Evelyn Freshman Nicole Celechovsky won the 1 singles state championship in 3A girls tennis, despite it being her first year competing in high school.
• Eli Hobson (Lewis-Palmer) and Jake Eccleston (Windsor) each set new overall state meet records at the boys swimming and diving state championships. Eccleston topped his old 4A record in the 100 breaststroke to claim the record across all classifications, only for Eli Hobson to then break that record with his attempt. Eccleston’s time still stands as the meet record for Class 4A.
• Niwot’s Addison Rittzenhein was named Gatorade’s Girls Cross Country National Player of the Year.
• Sophia Keronen (Niwot) and Taylor Connor (Palmer Ridge) became the first unified athletes to compete at the state championships. Keronen competed on both bars and floor, while Connor competed on vault.
• St. Mary’s Academy senior Madison Mintenko became a four-time champion in the 3A girls 200 IM.
• Three colorado prep records changed hands over the course of the track and field state championships, as Broomfield’s Lilly Nichols set a new all-time high in the pole vault, Karamoko Sacko ran the 110m hurdle in record-breaking time, and Cherokee Trail’s 4x200m relay team (Jayden Hughes, Kahari Wilbon, Nick Hoffsetz, Peyton Sommers) claimed the record with their stellar performance. De Beque senior Scottie Vines Jr. also set a new colorado preps record in the boys pole vault during the season.
• Three course records fell during the course of the cross country championships as Nadhia Campos (Vanguard School), Matthew Edwards (The Classical Academy) and Addison Ritzenhein (Niwot) all finished their respective races faster than anyone before them.
• Twin double partners Andrew Morgan and Zach Morgan won the 4A 2 doubles title and helped Kent Denver win the 2023 4A Boys Tennis Team State Championship in their final high school season.
