Speech and Debate State Championship Information


The Colorado High School Activities Association’s 2024 Speech and Debate State Champions will be crowned on Feb. 3, Feb. 24 and March 2. The two-day tournaments will be held at Niwot High School, Pueblo Central High School and Fort Collins High School.
- 3A State Tournament – February 2-3 (Niwot High School)
- 4A State Tournament – February 23-24 (Pueblo Central High School)
- 5A State Tournament – March 1-2 (Fort Collins High School)
What time will the competition start?
- The 3A competition will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, and at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
- The 4A competition will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, and resume at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
- The 5A competition will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, and at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
Where can I park?
- Free parking for the all of the competitions will be the available on-site at each of the high schools.
How are pairings determined?
- Pairings for the competitions will be determined by a random draw.

- Results can be found on CHSAANow.com following the competition, or on SpeechWire.
What events are offered at the State Competition?
- The 3A State Tournament offers Interpretation of Drama, Humor, Poetry, Duo Interpretation, Program Oral Interpretation, Combined Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Congressional Debate, One-on-One Value Debate, Impromptu Speaking and Creative Story Telling, so long as there are enough entries for the event to be viable.
- The 4A and 5A State Tournaments offer Interpretation of Drama, Humor, Poetry, Duo Interpretation, Program Oral Interpretation, National Extemporaneous Speaking, International Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Cross-Examination Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, and Congressional Debate, so long as there are enough entries for the event to be viable.
Do I need to buy a ticket to enter?
- No. Attendance for the event is free, although attendees won’t be allowed to spectate the live debates.
How can I become a judge?
- CHSAA is always looking for more speech and debate judges. If you’re interested in joining, you can take the quiz to become a judge.
Will there be a trophy presentation?
- Yes, medals are awarded to the finalists, semi-finalists, octa-finalists. There will also be a trophy presentation for the team champion and runner up at the conclusion of the event.
Will there be merchandise available to purchase on-site?
