Field Hockey State Championship Information

The 2023 Colorado high school field hockey state championship tournament will begin with its first round on Oct. 23rd and will conclude with the finals on Nov. 1st. The finals will be held at All-City Stadium in Denver (1500 S Franklin St, Denver, CO 80218).
 
How do teams qualify for the state championships?
The results of regular season play will determine automatic qualifiers and respective seeds in the postseason. 
 
Regular season matches must be completed and reported in MaxPreps by Thursday, October 19, 2023. All postseason qualifiers and pairings will be determined on Friday, October 20, 2023. The CHSAA staff can approve alternate dates in extreme situations. 
 
The CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index will seed teams 1-12. There will be no movement on the bracket based on the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index except in seeds 9-12 based on geography.

When will play start?
The first semifinal match will start at 5:30 p.m., with the second match starting at 7:30 p.m., on Oct. 30th. The finals match will start at 6 p.m.
 
For rounds prior to the semifinals, an updated bracket, including the locations, dates and times for every matchup, can be found on CHSAANow.com, once it becomes available.
 
What is the format of the competition?
A 12-team single-elimination tournament.
 
The six highest-seeded teams will automatically advance to the quarterfinals. The No. 7 and No. 8 seeds will automatically advance to the second round, where they’ll face the winners of No. 9 vs. No. 12 and No. 10 vs. No. 11.
 
The No. 1 seed and the No. 2 seed will meet the two teams that advance from the second round.
 
Who has qualified for the bracket for the state championships?
The league champion will automatically qualify for the bracket, and will be joined by 11 at-large schools.

What time will the venue open?
The gates at All-City Stadium will open one hour prior to the start of the game. For prior rounds, the time the venue opens will be determined by the host school.
 
Will there be a trophy presentation?
Yes. A trophy will be awarded to both the championship and runner-up teams, at the center of the field, after the conclusion of the championship game.
 
What happens in the case of a tie?
Teams will first play a 10-minute golden goal overtime period with teams of six field players and one goalkeeper (7v7). If the tie remains after that period, a second overtime period will start, with the same rules as the first. After those two periods, if the tie still exists, the overtime period will move to One-on-Ones. In One-on-Ones, each team will get five shots at the goal.
 
Will there be merchandise to purchase on site?

What happens in the case of rain, or bad weather?
In the event inclement weather prevents a postseason game from being held on the regularly scheduled date(s), the CHSAA office will work with the host site to select the next available date for competition. The game(s) will be rescheduled as quickly as possible and will be played close to the originally scheduled date depending on facility constraints. If play is suspended for any reason in a postseason game, the contest will be restarted at the point of interruption. The game(s) will be resumed as quickly as possible and will be played close to the originally scheduled date depending on facility constraints.
