Individual Boys Tennis State Championship Information

The 2023 Colorado high school individual boys tennis state championships will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-14. 
 
The state championship for 4A competitors will be at Pueblo City Park (3455 Nuckolls, Pueblo, CO 81005), while the championship for the 5A competitors will be at Denver City Park (2001 Colorado Blvd, Denver, CO 80205).
 
How do individuals qualify for the state championships?
The Class 4A & Class 5A regionals will qualify two players (1st and 2nd) in each event from eight regions. Challenge back matches are possible. If qualifiers to state are unable to compete, the next qualified team or No. 1, No. 2, or No. 3 individual from the same region may replace the vacant position. If a player who qualified from regionals is unable to compete at state, they cannot be substituted. The next alternate team/player needs to be pulled in. 
 
Where can I find results?
Results can be found on the brackets for every round.   
 
When will play start?
Play will start at 9:00 a.m. on every day of the tournament, for both classifications. The first round and quarterfinal matches will take place on Thursday, with semifinals on Friday and the championship and third-place matches on Saturday. 
 
What is the format of the competition?
Two full tiebreak sets, with a full third set if the first two sets are split
 
The tournament is single-elimination, though there is a consolation bracket for individuals who were eliminated by an opponent that reaches the finals.

How do playbacks (consolation matches) work?
Playbacks (consolation matches) occur when the player/team that you lose to advances to the finals. After the semifinals (9 am Friday), playbacks will immediately begin. The player/team who lost to the player/team advancing to the finals will play the first round of playbacks immediately upon the conclusion of the semifinals. The winner of the first round of playbacks will then play the loser of the semifinal match. Ultimately, the playback winners will compete for third and fourth place on Saturday morning at 9 am.
 
Who has qualified for the bracket for the state championships?
Players qualify for the state championship bracket through regionals. The top-two individual finishers in each regional advance to the state bracket.
 
How do we know when a certain player is performing?
Individual match-ups will be shown on the brackets.
 
Where can I find past champions or team winners?
The digital program includes information on past champions, winners and more! Past champions can also be found in the championship archive.
 
Do I need to buy a ticket to enter?
No. Tickets and entry fee aren’t required for the tennis state championships.
 
What time will the venue open?
With the state championships being hosted at city parks, the venues will always be open. That said, practice will not be allowed until 7 a.m. each morning of the state championships.
 
Will there be a trophy presentation?
Medals will be awarded to the first four finishers in each division of the championship bracket. A certificate for every individual who participates in a state tournament is available HERE on our website.
 
What happens in the case of rain, or bad weather?
In case of bad weather, the tournament committee will put together a plan to get the championships completed as efficiently and fairly as possible for all participants and schools involved. Please be prepared for any contingency plans including but not limited to shortened formats, playing indoors, playing at multiple sites, etc.
